Stanwood High School (SHS) staff got a surprise at the beginning of the school year. The high school had 116 more students show up than expected. The Stanwood-Camano School District estimated that SHS would serve about 1,430 students . not the 1,546 currently enrolled. Full Story

Alleged drive-by shooters arrested
Two Camano Island residents were arrested Thursday in connection with a drive-by shooting that occurred near Milltown. Patrick Vaughn, 27, and Kabrina Lunsford, 25, were arrested in Santa Clarita, California, and booked into the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office detention center. They are being charged in connection with attempted murder and drive by shooting. Full Story
Vaccinations advised by health officials
Instead of one flu vaccine this year, there are two. The seasonal flu vaccine will cover three strains of the influenza virus, said Dr. Gary Goldbaum, Snohomish Health District director and health officer. The H1N1 vaccine only targets one strain, earlier referred to as swine flu. Full Story
Discoveries abound at Harvest Jubilee
Dale Slyngstad, owner of Simple Produce in Stanwood, found a giant winter squash, called the long of Naples, in her fields last week. When she found it, Slyngstad said she told her husband, Tom, "There is an orca in the garden! Full Story
