New students flock to SHS
More students than expected district wide but overall enrollment down
Stanwood High School (SHS) staff got a surprise at the beginning of the school year. The high school had 116 more students show up than expected. The Stanwood-Camano School District estimated that SHS would serve about 1,430 students . not the 1,546 currently enrolled. Full Story

Humpy run largest seen in decades
There's definitely something fishy going on. Standing on a bank of the Stillaguamish River just south of Stanwood, fishermen Fred Lee and Richard Bell, of Stanwood, spent Thursday morning trying to catch pink salmon, also known as humpies. Full Story
Alleged drive-by shooters arrested
Two Camano Island residents were arrested Thursday in connection with a drive-by shooting that occurred near Milltown. Patrick Vaughn, 27, and Kabrina Lunsford, 25, were arrested in Santa Clarita, California, and booked into the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office detention center. They are being charged in connection with attempted murder and drive by shooting. Full Story
A long line of gentle leaders, communityminded journalists
The other night former NEWS Publisher Dave Pinkham and his wife Pam hosted a gala dinner at Four Springs Lake Preserve on Camano Island to honor those who had helped make the NEWS what it is today. Shirley Danielson, the late wife of Cliff Danielson who sold the paper to the Pinkhams in 1985, heard what a gentle leader, yet hard-nosed journalist he was known to be. Full Story

Island County commissioners meeting The Board of Commissioners of Island County will meet in special session Tues., Sept. 22, 6 p.m. at the Camano Senior Center, Camano Island, to hold a public hearing and consider adoption of a proposed ordinance which would establish the Camano Gateway Village Zone. John W. Vevig
1922-2009
John W. Vevig passed away Tuesday, Sept. 8, at Skagit Valley Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was born in Elliott, Ill. to Allie and Lillian Vevig. He was preceded in death by his wife, Katharine, the love of his life, as well as his parents and sister. Full Story

JULY 10, 1935 - AUG. 28, 2009
Sheila Ferguson, 74, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully with family by her side on Aug. 28 at Josephine Sunset Home in Stanwood. Sheila was born to John "Jack" and Elsie Campbell on July 10, 1935 in Aberdeen, Wash., where she was raised and attended school. Full Story
WILLIAM JOHN BILL' HUBSCHMITT
OCT. 30, 1933 - SEPT. 1, 2009
William John (Bill) Hubschmitt, 75, of Chehalis, died Sept. 1, 2009 of acute leukemia at Capital Medical Center in Olympia. An informal celebration of his life was held in Seattle Sept. 5. Bill Hubschmitt was born at home Oct. 30, 1933 to Mildred Hannah Hubschmitt and Ralph Hubschmitt in Patterson, New Jersey. Full Story
