High netters split season openers
Overcoming a surprising loss to Lake Stevens in a non-league encounter last Tuesday night, the Lady Spartan volleyball team (1- 1 overall) came back two nights later to outplay the Eagles from Arlington 3-1. Full Story
Sparts' gridiron team tumbles in non-league openers
Stanwood's football Spartans (0-0 in league, 0- 2 overall) began the 2009 campaign with some early scoring against two of the finer Western Conference 4A elevens, but in the end both opponents rose to the occasion to outscore the local gridiron squad and send the Sparts to a pair of non-conference losses. Tennis team drops pair to open season, tandem only win
The Spartan boys' tennis team dropped their opening two matches of the 2009 season last week to Everett and Marysville-Pilchuck. The Seagulls from Everett pulled out a 6-1 victory whereas the Tommies from M-P had to outlast their Stanwood counterparts with a last-ditch, come-from-behind effort at No. 3 doubles for a narrow 4-3 triumph. Spartan soccer club loses 3-1
Stanwood's booters (0- 1 in league and overall) managed to enter halftime knotted 1-1 with Everett's defending 2008 3A state champions last Wednesday. But the visiting Seagulls returned to the pitch and rallied behind Annie Sittauer's second and third goals of the night to pull away for a 3-1 girls' soccer victory. Full Story

Crab catch cards due Sept. 21
Pink salmon are everywhere in areas 8.1 and 8.2: in the water, above the water, Kayak Point, the Head, at state park, Utsalady Bay, Elger Bay and off the shores of East Camano. If there is water, there seems to be humpies. Spoons, squid jigs and Buzz Bombs are still very effective. Full Story
