Solemn remembrance
With the echo of the traditional tolling of bells Stanwood-Camano Fire and Rescue honor guard pay respect to those who perished on September 11, 2001 during a ceremony Friday morning. The eighth anniversary of the clandestine terrorist attacks that toppled the World Trade Center towers, damaged the Pentagon, brought down a jetliner over a Pennsylvania field and claimed more than 3,000 lives, was marked by a moment of silence and the lowering of the American flag to half-staff. Merchant reports credit card fraud
Stanwood Police responded to the following calls last week: • An investigation continues after a credit card was used fraudulently Sept. 4 at a business in the 7000 block of 265th Street NW. • Two abandoned vehicles were impounded Sept. 4, one from the 27100 block of 101st Avenue NW and another from the 27400 block of 101st Avenue NW. Grant pays for flashing lights in school zones
As the school year begins, the number of children who walk to school increases and with that comes fear of traffic accidents. Stanwood Police Chief Ty Trenary said keeping children safe in these zones is a serious concern. He hopes newly installed flashing warning lights in school zones around town will prevent pedestrian injuries, thanks to a $45,000 grant. Full Story

Elisabeth Jaquith, a kindergartner, shows her map of the new Summit Academy to her classmates on the school's first day of school Wednesday. Summit is a private school started by Jane Cassady and Linda Henning. The school is located at the Stanwood Community and Senior Center, and will grow to include grades K-8. Principal of Arlington private school pleads guilty to kidnapping
Mark Brown, 38, of Arlington, plead guilty Friday to kidnapping in the second degree. Brown was charged last July to one count rape of a child in the third degree following an investigation by the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office that he, a principal at Highland Christian School, Arlington, had sex with a then 14-year-old female student. Friday morning backups due to pounding
Crews working on the Mark Clark Bridge had planned to end the night-time single lane closure by 5:30 a.m. Friday morning in time for commuter traffic, but the well-laid plans went awry. "We had to extend (the closure) for safety reasons, said the WSDOT representative, Dave Chesson. Full Story
Stanwood man held for alleged robberies
A 21-year-old Stanwood man was arrested recently in Lynnwood for suspicion of robbery and unlawful possession of a firearm. According to police records, the man was subsequently arrested by Arlington Police while in custody last week for an alleged armed robbery at a pizza parlor in Arlington. Full Story
