SHS students near state SAT average

The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) has a maximum score of 800 for each subject area. In the Stanwood-Camano School District, 12th grade students who took the exam last year scored near the state average, and above the national average. Stanwood-Camano students scored similar to the state average in the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT).
Most colleges require students to take either the SAT or the ACT in order to be accepted.
In the Stanwood-Camano School District, 211 students took the SAT last year, said Christine Gruver, Stanwood High School (SHS) principal. The SAT tests critical reading, writing and math.
Of those students, the ones who were in the class of 2009 averaged 530 in critical reading, 527 in math and 500 in writing, she said. The maximum score in any part of the SAT is 800.
"The SAT tests students on a specific academic area and how they can apply what they know," Gruver said.
As students statewide, the average scores were 524 in critical reading, 531 in math and 507 in writing. Both the state and the district average scores were higher than the national average of 501 in critical reading, 515 in math and 493 in writing.
Students in the state scored higher than all other states where at least 26 percent of its students tested, according to the state Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction Web site. Typically, when a larger percentage of students participate in the test, the average scores are lower.
"For a state that's 42nd in state funding, it really shows that our teachers are working hard with their students to get these results," said state Superintendent of Public Instruction Randy Dorn in a press release. "Our students who stay in school and work toward the goal of college have once again proven to be among the nation's best."
