Harvest time Stanwood will celebrate this year's bountiful harvest with its Harvest Jubilee festival Saturday, Sept. 19. The festival hub in downtown Stanwood includes hayrides, exhibits, agricultural demonstrations, workshops, games for kids, story telling and locally grown food. Ministerial Assn's 9/11 prayer vigil
The Stanwood/Camano Ministerial Association will conduct a 24-hour prayer vigil for peace starting at 12:01 a.m. Fri., Sept. 11 in the yurt at Josephine Sunset Home. Dress warmly. Last year's vigil attracted more than 200 participants from 11 congregations. Anyone who would like to lead the prayers for a specific hour, fax Phil Lewis, 629-4362. Leaders have the freedom to hold a silent vigil hour, bring music, whether tape, disc or guitar, or use other prayers and devotions. Voices must be quiet from 8 p.m. to 9 a.m. Chaplain Phil Lewis will be present for the entire vigil.
'Collision' class Stanwood's Traffic Safety program will be hosting another Collision class put on by Doug Gold and his Snohomish County Collision investigation team Sat., Sept. 12, 9 a.m.- noon in the Stanwood High School Performing Arts Center. Church 'extravaganza' is next Sunday
Our Saviour's Lutheran Church will be hosting an "extravaganza" Sun., Sept. 13, to kick off the new church year. One worship service will be held at 9:30 a.m., followed by an outdoor barbecue that will include beverages and desserts. Attendees can explore programs for middle and high school youth, Sunday school, age 3 through grade 12, adult Bible studies and "ConneXion," a sevenweek study and fellowship open to singles, couples and families. Auditions open for local talent show

'Walk A Mile In My Shoes'
The second annual Friends of the Poor® Walk Sat., Sept. 26 will help neighbors in need. The North Sound Council of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul encourages residents of Snohomish County to participate as walkers, pledgers, volunteers, or all three. All donations received from the Stanwood/Camano area would go to St. Cecelia Church and the St. Vincent de Paul volunteers would use those funds to help the less fortunate in the local community. Trail users invited to potluck
The Centennial Trail Coalition of Snohomish County will meet for a potluck picnic at 3 p.m., and a 4 p.m. business meeting, Sun., Sept 13, at one of the two picnic shelters at the Machias Trailhead. Volunteers who can come earlier or stay later are welcome to help count trail users. All permits have been obtained for the construction of Phase II of the Centennial Trail from the city of Arlington to the Snohomish/Skagit county line near Lake Mc- Murray. Bidding will open in early September, and the contract will be awarded before the end of the month. The Trail Coalition and Snohomish County are just strating to plan a ground-breaking ceremony. Learn how to spot good horse property
A tour of a picturesque farm Sat., Sept. 26 in the Grandview area, north of Arlington (map and directions sent to registrants) will be part of a presentation by Alayne Blickle, of Horses for Clean Water, who will highlight what to look for if you're buying a new farm, especially if you want to bring home horses. Two identical tours will be conducted, 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. The tours include a rotational grazing system for both cattle and horses, concrete compost bins, watering facilities and well-defined sacrifice areas to keep those pastures green! There is a small fee for the barbecue lunch. Alayne will also present "Tips for preparing your farm for fall/winter" during lunch. Become a climate steward after training
WSU Extension Climate Stewards are trained volunteers who study global climate change science. In exchange for 36 hours of professional training from university-level presenters, volunteers then offer 36 hours of volunteer service according to their own schedules. Anyone with time for training and volunteer service, is invited to become a Climate Steward. Training will be held at Padilla Bay Reserve in Skagit County 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Thursdays, Oct. 15-Nov. 19. R otary club seeks exchange participants
Rotary club members of Stanwood/Camano Island are seeking outstanding professionals to visit Brazil in spring 2010 as part of the group study exchange program of The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International. The purpose of the program is to promote international understanding and goodwill through personal connection. The Rotary Foundation pays for round-trip airfare, and the Rotary club members in the host country provide meals, lodging and group travel in their district. Team members pay for personal and incidental expenses. Young adults between the ages of 25 and 40 who are interested in applying should be employed full-time in a business or profession. 'Sewing for Teens' class starts soon
A seweing class for ages 11-18 will cover all levels of sewing at Davis Place Tuesdays, 3 - 5 p.m. starting Sept. 15 and ending Nov. 17. There is a registration fee and scholarships are available. Haggens to help with school supplies
Haggen Food & Pharmacy is partnering with its customers to provide foster children with supplies for the start of school. When customers buy and donate a backpack at a Haggen Food & Pharmacy store for $9.99 through Sept. 13, Haggen Food & Pharmacy will fill the backpack with $21 worth of school supplies, including paper, pencils, crayons, a binder and a ruler. The backpacks and school supplies will be distributed to foster children by Treehouse for Kids. E xchange students need host homes
International high school exchange students are coming to study in the Stanwood area during the 2009-10 school year, and they need families to host them. Two students for host families this year are Lucca and Cornelia. Lucca is a 17-year-old boy from Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, who loves playing soccer. Cornelia is a 17-year-old girl from Lidingo, Sweden, who is also very fond of playing soccer. They are both excellent students and will have their own spending money and health insurance. Cyclists gear up for Bike MS Ride
More than 2,000 cyclists are expected to participate Sept. 12 and 13 in the Bike MS Ride, presented by Point B, a fundraiser for multiple sclerosis research. The 2009 Bike MS Ride follows scenic routes through Skagit, Whatcom and Island counties. The local ride offers riders a choice of figure-8 routes ranging from 20 to 100 miles, mechanical support, frequent and fully stocked rest stops, support and gear vehicles, access to medical personnel as well as catered meals, entertainment and other amenities.
