SHS takes concussions seriously
Concussions are a part of sports. With the newly enacted Lystedt law, youth sport coaches across the state are required to pull athletes suspected of concussions out of the game, and not return them to play until a medical professional has approved it. Full Story
Equipment stolen from business
Stanwood Police responded to the following incidents last week. • A business in the 8900 block of 271st Street NW was burglarized and a piece of equipment was stolen Aug. 25. Tabs were stolen from two trailers parked at that location. Full Story

Unemployment decreases in Sno. and Island co.
Both counties had a decrease in unemployment rates based on the preliminary July results. In Snohomish County, the rate went from 10 percent in June to 9.8 percent in July, according to the July labor report. Of 387,580 county residents, 38,170 were looking for employment. Full Story
PUD $30 rebate offer through end of 2009
Snohomish County PUD's conservation program that offers $30 to customers willing to give up their old refrigerators and freezers is scheduled to run through the end of 2009. Since the program's inception in 2004, the utility has collected more than 14,000 energy-wasting units, which can use up to three times the energy of newer models. Full Story
Injured pedestrian remains in serious condition
A Stanwood man remains in serious condition in the intensive care unit at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Matthew Vandeuren, 20, was airlifted to Harborview early in the morning of Aug. 16 after being hit by a vehicle. He was found lying on Dove Drive near Puffin Court on Camano Island. Full Story
Mad dog, burglar caught
Island County Sheriff's deputies on Camano Island responded to the following recently: • A woman living in the 100 block of Utsalady Road reported an aggressive dog threatening her Aug. 21. • A 34-year-old man was arrested for burglary to a residence in the 300 block of Grandview Avenue Aug. 21. Forest district honors county's trash clean-up crew
Snohomish County's Solid Waste Division was honored last week by the Darrington Ranger District of the Mt. Baker Snoqualmie National Forest for an innovative litter program launched nearly 10 years ago. In 2000, following studies showing increasing problems with illegal dumping, the county's Solid Waste Division rolled out the environmental cleanup crew. Full Story
