50 Golden Years
John and Coleen Poole were married 50 years ago Sept. 5, in Suquamish, Wash., and will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary by taking an Alaskan cruise. They moved to Stanwood in 1967, where they owned and operated Stanwood Camano Disposal for 20 years. They have three daughters, Cindy Smith, Darla (Pat) Scarboro and Jeannie Poole. Grandchildren are Amanda, Johnny, Abby Struiksma, Tara and Noah Smith, Samantha, Kaitlyn Scarboro. Full Story
Community Focus
STANWOOD COMMUNITY AND SENIOR CENTER recently received a $5,000 grant from Tulalip Tribes Charitable Fund in support of the programs and services provided. The Center is grateful for their support, says center director Michelle Johnson. Full Story

Lights of Christmas in Top 100 events
The Warm Beach Christian Camp and Conference Center's holiday event, "Lights of Christmas," has been chosen as one of the American Bus Association's Top 100 Events in North America for group travel in 2010. Arlington's Fly-In was selected for the 2009 Top 100 list. Full Story

EARLY HISTORY Dagny Bergitte Unsgaard was born Aug. 31, 1899 in Norway and grew up to marry Lars Nygaard there. They came to Stanwood in 1943, first farming, then he worked as a carpenter. Dagny was known for her quick wit and skill as a seamstress. Louie Stubb started first grade at Norman in 1899, and later became a mover and shaker around Stanwood. Full Story

Pacific Scrolls
"Olympic Triptych II" is by Chaim Bezalel and Yonnah Ben Levy, who will present an exhibition of their "Pacific Scrolls" series of paintings at Moses Lake Museum, Sept. 11 through Oct. 10. The couple collaborates to create the scrolls, combining his photography with her painting. They range in size from four to seven feet. The artists have done commissions for hospitals and health clinics in this region and beyond. They operate the Stanwood House Gallery in Stanwood. Full Story

A second chance
The Second Chance Thrift Shop on Camano Island recently held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the end of a year-long remodeling effort. Second Chance is a major fundraising arm of the Camano Senior and Community Center. The thrift store's largest room was named in honor of Joan Wilson (center), a volunteer and board member, who galvanized and organized the remodeling project. The thrift shop is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Donations are accepted 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Full Story
Mentoring program gets $500,000 from ARA
Volunteers of America Western Washington announced Aug. 28 that its Mentoring Children of Promise (MCP) program has received a $500,000 grant from the American Recovery Act awarded by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP). Full Story
Savana
Savana is a sweet 1-year-old orange tabby. She's affectionate and cuddly, though initially shy in new situations. She'd prefer a quiet household with only older children. The odyssey of my first year in school
The first day of school for a kindergarten student is one of life's hallmarks. It's funny, though, when my friends talk about their kindergarten teacher, I can't remember a single one of my teachers' names. I guess that is to be expected. I was only 5 at the time and had more than four kindergarten teachers spread across three countries. Full Story
