A fishing derby to benefit Safe Harbor Free Clinic in Stanwood is being held Aug. 29 and 30, with weigh in Sat., 10 a.m. - noon and Sun., 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., at Camano Island State Park boat launch. An entry fee $45 per person is required. Each participant can enter one pink, plus one other salmon species per day. There will be a separate prize for the biggest pink. All WDFW rules apply. Rain barrel construction, is Thurs., Aug. 27, 3 to 7 p.m., by the WSU Extension with their display at the new Camano Island Thursday Afternoon Market at Terry's Corner. Learn how you can construct your own rain barrel, which can be attached to your downspouts to capture runoff from the roof. A rain barrel display and handout materials will be available, and demonstrations will be given, 4 to 7 p.m. Questions will also be answered by the presenter, Scott Chase, Shore Stewards coordinator for Island County. AWANA starts next month at chapel
Camano Chapel will be starting Awana Sept. 9, with a 6 p.m. info and registration night Sept. 16 will be the first night of regular club, 6:30-8 p.m. Jr. High and high school meet from 5:30-6:15 p.m. There is a cost per child or family rates. For more information, contact 387-7202.
Entrepreneur speaks to Mabana Flames
The Mabana Flames will meet Thurs., Sept. 3, at the Mabana Fire station,10:30 a.m. Kim Shelman of Utopia Alpacas, is featured speaker, talking about being an entrepreneur on the island. A luncheon will follow her presentation. For newcomers to Camano, the Mabana Flames is the auxiliary that supports volunteer fire fighters, and helps provide aid in the event of a disaster. Ham Club welcomes guest Thursday

Rummage sale/breakfast at grange
The monthly pancake breakfast of South Camano Grange will be Sat., Aug. 29, 8 to 11 a.m. Blueberry pancakes will be served, along with ham and sausage, scrambled eggs, etc. Open to the public. Bike MS Ride in Island County
More than 2,000 cyclists are expected to participate Sept. 12 and 13 in the Bike MS Ride, presented by Point B, an annual fundraiser that supports multiple sclerosis research and local services and programs. Starting from the Skagit County Fairgrounds in Mount Vernon, the 2009 Bike MS Ride follows scenic routes through Skagit, Whatcom and Island counties. The local ride offers riders a choice of figure-8 routes ranging from 20 to 100 miles, mechanical support, frequent and fully stocked rest stops, support and gear vehicles, access to medical personnel as well as catered meals, entertainment and other amenities. Camano Island's sixth annual Labor Day barbecue is 1 to 5 p.m. at the Oddfellows Park, 96 South Camano Ridge Rd., Mon., Sept. 7. Camano View Dash is August 29
Camano View Dash, a 10K and 5K run/walk is Sat., Aug. 29, beginning at 9 .m. Starting point is Utsalady Elementary School, 608 Arrowhead Rd. Sponsored by John L. Scott Real Estate, proceeds will fund the TeamFitness Dayna Fure Scholarship, as well as contribute monies to the Stanwood High School Boys and Girls Swim Team. Donate items for September auction The 2009 gala auction for the Camano Senior and Community Center is set for Sat., Sept. 26, celebrating the fall harvest with items such as a Holland America seven-day cruise, vacations in Palm Springs and Mexico, scrapbooking and stamping supplies, and art donated by many local artists. To purchase tickets or a table for the event, contact the center, 387-0222, and ask for Lucy, Joyce or Karla. If you would like to donate an item for the auction, contact Karla Jacks at the center.
Commissioners accepting applications
The Board of Island County Commissioners are accepting applications now for the 2010, 2 percent program year. Deadline is Aug. 31, and they must be in the commissioners' office by 4:30 p.m. Applications sent by fax or e-mail will not be accepted. Call the commissioners' office for an application or if there are questions about the program.
Vendors wanted at Camano Commons
"We are currently looking for antique vendors, specialty gift items, and local artist vendors," says Sylvy Smith, " every Sunday 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Play volleyball, listen to live music and eat at an outside barbecue or have a slice of pizza, as well as indoor dining at the Commons, three notable restaurants.
