In last week's edition of Senior Scene a typo appeared in a headline featuring Stanwood resident Marion Benson. The headline should have read: Woman worked on B-17 bombers. The NEWS regrets the error. Full Story
School board adopts budget
The Stanwood-Camano School Board unanimously passed the 2009-10 budget, which includes reductions determined earlier this year. The district's $48.8 million operating budget includes about $620,000 from the district's reserves, which the school board decided to use to help limit cuts. Full Story
Trucking firm fined $14,500 for oil spill
There may be no use in crying over spilled milk but for one fuel transporter, spilled diesel led to a hefty fine. Washington State Department of Ecology (DOE) fined Olmsted Transportation Co. Inc., of Mount Vernon, $14,500 for a diesel oil spill that covered more than nine miles of Maddox Creek and Big Ditch in Stanwood last year. Full Story
Island County financial outlook brightens with treasurer's report
After cutting back programs and personnel, Island County had its first indication the current economic crisis is starting to subside. "The light's at the end of the tunnel and it's not a train," said Island County Treasurer Linda Riffe. Full Story
Community Transit offers late trips serving the Evergreen State Fair
To make it feasible for county residents to take the bus to the fair, Community Transit is adding late night trips on several routes from the Evergreen State Fairgrounds Aug. 27 through Sept. 7, delivering fairgoers to the main gate all day and taking them home at night. Full Story
2009 Silvana Fair results
This is the final installment of awards and prizes given at the Silvana fair last month. CERAMICS Porcelain, handmade, Carol Crowley swept this category with five blues, an overall, reserve overall and a special. DVDs lifted and DUIs on the rise
Island County Sheriff's deputies on Camano Island responded to the following recently: • A woman living in the 900 block of Port Susan Terrace Road reported the theft of several DVDs from her home Aug. 15. • A 34-year-old man was arrested for assaulting a 68- year-old man at his home on Santa Fe Court Aug. 15. Injured pedestrian airlifted to Harborview
A Stanwood man is in serious condition after being airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle early last Saturday morning. Matthew Vandeuren, 20, was lying on Dove Drive near Puffin Court on Camano Island when a northbound 1998 Dodge Stratus driven by a Stanwood woman, age 23, hit him. Full Story
