For Dayna Camano View Dash, a 10K and 5K run/walk, is Sat., Aug. 29, beginning at 9 .m. Starting point is Utsalady Elementary School, 608 Arrowhead Rd. Former guests, employees and people interested in Cama Beach Resort history are invited to come to the former resort Fri., Aug. 22 when Cama Beach State Park will have a celebration of Muriel Risk's legacy (Muriel Stradley Risk 1907 - 1990) as manager of the historic resort. There will be cake and sharing of stories at 1 p.m. People attending should ride the park shuttle to the site, or walk down the hill. Bike MS Ride in Island County
More than 2,000 cyclists are expected to participate Sept. 12 and 13 in the Bike MS Ride, presented by Point B, an annual fundraiser that supports multiple sclerosis research and local services and programs. Starting from the Skagit County Fairgrounds in Mount Vernon, the 2009 Bike MS Ride follows scenic routes through Skagit, Whatcom and Island counties. The local ride offers riders a choice of figure-8 routes ranging from 20 to 100 miles, mechanical support, frequent and fully stocked rest stops, support and gear vehicles, access to medical personnel as well as catered meals, entertainment and other amenities. Camano Island's sixth annual Labor Day barbecue is 1 to 5 p.m. at the Oddfellows Park, 96 South Camano Ridge Rd., Mon., Sept. 7. Concert on the green comes to Camano
Sat., Aug. 22, is the "Celtic Concert on the Green," 6 p.m. (gates open at 5), at St Aidan's, 1318 E SR 532. Celtic music from the greater Seattle area. Children under 3 are free but all others need a ticket. Bring a blanket, snacks and beverages available. This will benefit "Project Serve," a community outreach program of Youth for Christ. Re-opening of thrift shop set
Second Chance Thrift Shop's grand re-opening is this weekend, Aug. 21 and 22. The Camano Senior and Community Center is celebrating the newly remodeled, freshly painted store with new bargains and collectables. Friday there will be free hot dogs, cookies, and beverages; Saturday, free cookies and beverage, 1335 E SR 532, Camano Island.
Derby benefits Safe Harbor Clinic
This fishing derby is a 50/50 fundraiser for the Safe Harbor Free Clinic in Stanwood, with entry fee $45 per person. Weigh in is at Camano Island State Park boat launch Saturday, 10 a.m. - noon., and Sunday, 10 a.m. -2 p.m. Each participant can enter 1 pink plus 1 other salmon species per day. There will be a separate prize for the biggest pink. All WDFW rules apply. Prizes will be awarded at 3 p.m. Sunday along with free hot dogs. Thursday afternoon market opens
Sylvy Smith invites the public to the opening of a new Thursday afternoon Market at Terry's Corner Aug. 20, 3 to 7 p.m. It will be open, along with the Sunday Antique, Specialty Gift Items and local Artists Market, until Oct. 31, weather permitting. Roxane Quick will join the markets with her New York hot dog cart, and the Simple Produce Farm delivering organic produce. Art for Kids, camp sessions added
Summer Art Camp is adding more sessions this month. John Delzell (formerly Muhler) and his wife, Jenna, are offering a four-day camp session for the budding and serious young artist at John's studio (2177 Highland Drive) on Camano Island's east side with beach access where the kids get to explore when taking a break. Working in mixed media, the artist will experience "plein air" acrylic painting and drawing, colored pencil projects, wire and clay sculpture, and "Wings of All Things," a wooden mobile project. Donate items for September auction
The 2009 gala auction for the Camano Senior and Community Center is set for Sat., Sept. 26, celebrating the fall harvest with items such as a Holland America 7 day cruise, vacations in Palm Springs and Mexico, scrapbooking and stamping supplies, and art donated by many local artists. Commissioners accepting applications
The Board of Island County Commissioners are accepting applications now for the 2010 2 percent program year. Deadline is Aug. 31, and they must be in the commissioners office by 4:30 p.m. Applications sent by fax or email will not be accepted. Call the commissioner's office for an application or if there are questions about the program.
Vendors wanted at Camano Commons
"We are currently looking for antique vendors, specialty gift items, and local artist vendors," says Sylvy Smith, "every Sunday 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Play volleyball, listen to live music and eat at an outside barbecue or have a slice of pizza, as well as indoor dining at the Commons, three notable restaurants."
