The Alzheimer's Association's annual North Sound Memory Walk is Sept. 26, with registration at 8:30 a.m., and the walk starts at 10 a.m. at the Skagit Transit Station in Mount Vernon. Free dental checkup for children
Free dental checkups for children ages 1-12 will be offered at Stanwood Haggen Food & Pharmacy 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Wed., Aug. 19, at 26603 72nd Ave. N.W. Dental checkups are offered by Colgate in its 31-foot-long van. A dental professional will conduct non-probing visual inspections of a child's teeth. Each child will receive a dental report card, a brushing kit, a gift bag and coupons for toothpaste and toothbrushes.
O pen house to honor 'lifesavers'
The public is welcome to join residents and staff of Merrill Gardens at Stanwood at their fourth annual "Lifesavers Open House," 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Fri., Aug. 28, to honor men and women in local police, fire and rescue departments whose services are vital to the community. No reservations required. There will be door prizes to raise money for SUPPORT 99, a non-profit 501c3 organization of chaplains and volunteer response teams who assist people in crisis after 911 calls. Get free school supplies Saturday

Historical society seeks stories
The Skagit County Historical Society is seeking local stories for its 50-year anniversary, and is inviting former Skagit residents who now live in the Stanwood area to submit essays about their family's history, business or a special events that occurred in Skagit County prior to 1959. Essays of under 1,000 words should be submitted by Sept. 15 to the Cultural Historian, Skagit County Historical Society, PO Box 818, La Conner WA 98257. Authors of the 10 best essays will receive a year's membership to the museum and, with the writer's permission, will be published in the historical society's quarterly newsletter. Norwegian pianist Knut Erik Jensen will present a recital entitled "Nordic Elegance" 7 p.m. Tues., Sept. 1 in the sanctuary of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in west Stanwood. The program will feature piano music from 1900-1950, by Norwegian composers rarely performed in the United States.
Help remove invasive ivy at Kayak Pt.
