Summer burn ban continues

Fire season is here and as temperatures rise, many counties and fire agencies have instituted burn bans. These bans can prohibit everything from burning yard waste to a campfire.

A burn ban violation is punishable by a fine of up to $10,000.

"Outdoor fires that get out of control can cause large wildfires that put citizens, property and firefighters at risk," said State Fire Marshal Mike Matlick.

You may also be responsible for the cost of putting out the fire as well as any damaged property.

Residents are encouraged to contact local fire department for permit and safety requirements before starting any outdoor fires.

For information, see the Office of State Fire Marshal's website at www.wsp. wa.gov/fire/firemars or the Department of Natural Resources Web site at www. dnr.wa.gov or by calling 800-323-BURN.

The Office of the State Fire Marshal is a Bureau of the Washington State Patrol, providing fire and life safety services to the citizens of Washington State including inspections of state licensed facilities, plan review of school construction projects, licensing of fire sprinkler contractors and pyrotechnic operators, training Washington State's firefighters, and collecting emergency response data.
