People For Puget Sound's Sound Stewardship Program adopted four Snohomish County restoration sites for long-term stewardship in 2007 and one of them is Kayak Point. They are now seeking volunteers to help remove invasive ivy and help improve the wildlife habitat features at the park at 15610 Marine Dr. A work party is planned from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 22 along with a Beach EXPO with handson education booths and guided low-tide beach walks. PFPS provides tools, gloves and training. Space for the work teams is limited so RSVP ASAP to Gail at register@pugetsound.org. Fir-Conway Lutheran Church invites the public to their annual salmon barbecue Fri., Aug. 21, 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the Harvey Wolden Farm, 21162 Mann Road, Conway. Pre-event tickets available at the front office of Josephine; children under five free. Proceeds of the dinner will be used to purchase electric beds for Josephine Sunset Home. Plein Air Invitational benefits trust

During the month of August, Stanwood's Gallery by the Bay is presenting the All Clay and Plein Air Invitational as a follow up to the "Art Celebrates Conservation" show and auction last month benefiting the Whidbey Camano Land Trust. Many of the plein air artists who participated in the July event are showing their work at the gallery in conjunction with the gallery's third annual all clay ceramic art show. Gallery by the Bay owner, Gayle Picken, is donating 10 percent of art sales to the Whidbey Camano Land Trust.

WSU 'Know and Grow' workshop:

WSU Skagit County Extension Master Gardeners, in partnership with WSU Mount Vernon NWREC, are presenting a "Know & Grow" workshop on extending the growing season in your home garden, from 1 - 2:30 p.m. Tues., Aug. 18 at WSU Mount Vernon NWREC, 16650 State Route 536 (Memorial Highway). Auditions open for 'Pippi Longstocking'

META Performing Arts will hold auditions for its upcoming production of "Pippi Longstocking. Auditions are 6 to 9 p.m. Wed., Aug. 26 and Thurs., Aug. 27, at the Presbyterian Church, 15th and Broadway in Mount Vernon. The show will run Nov. 20-29 at McIntyre Hall. The cast includes adults and youth ages seven and up. Singers should prepare a one-minute song and, if interested in a speaking part, a one-minute monologue. META's youth summer camp has mornings, afternoons, or full days available.

O ld Time Fiddlers jam Friday nights

The Old Time Fiddlers meet Fridays Aug. 14 and 28, and Sept. 11 and 25 at the Sisco Heights Community Club, 13527 99th Ave NE, south of Arlington. Celtic jam starts at 5 p.m., workshop at 6 p.m., and circle jam begins at 7 p.m. Snacks throughout the evening. Listeners and acoustic musicians of all ages are welcome. Bring your instruments. Admission is free.

NAMI-Northsound cancels meeting

NAMI-Northsound, a support group for family and friends of the mentally ill, will not meet in August. The next meeting is scheduled for Sept. 21.

Students prior to 1969 invited to reunion

Davis Place holds guitar hero battle

Davis Place, next door to the Stanwood Community Resource Center, presents Guitar Hero Battle 7-9 p.m. Fri., Aug. 14, an event created by teens for teens. The tournament will be taking place on the big stage. Registration is free from 7-7:30 p.m. For information call Davis Place, 629-5257.

Screenings for arterial disease, others

The Skagit Regional Heart & Vascular Institute, a partnership of Skagit Valley Hospital, Skagit Valley Medical Center-Cardiology and Skagit Radiology, offers health screenings for adults, age 18 and up. Tests available include ankle brachial pressure index to help detect peripheral artery disease; blood pressure; full lipid profile for cholesterol plus glucose; and body composition testing. Screenings are held Tuesday mornings and there is a fee.

Merrill Gardens hosts Life Line Screen

Merrill Gardens at Stanwood hosts Life Line Screening Aug. 13, with appointments beginning at 9 a.m. There are five screens that take 60-90 minutes to complete. L ivestock advisor training offered

The WSU Livestock Advisor program is offering Livestock Advisor Training, starting Sept. 9, at WSU Skagit County Extension, 11768 Westar Lane, Suite A, Burlington. The 60 hours of livestock-based training covers feeding, breeding, and housing of beef, sheep, goats, poultry, and swine, as well as mud, manure, pasture, and predator management using best management practices. The evening classes are taught by WSU Extension staff, veterinarians, and other experts in their fields.
