Vote yes to ensure services
Dear Editor: A rural community like Camano Island relies heavily on its fire department. It provides emergency fire, medical and rescue services for all of us. We need to support the August 18 fire and EMS levy renewal to ensure a continuation of these services at the current level. Full Story
Bonnie Brindle closes business
Dear Editor: Since 2004 Brindles has worn many faces for its customers and friends. With such a wonderful building, a hub was created for us all. Sadly though, I must close Brindles as of July 20. I do not take this action lightly. Most of you know my heart is in this building and the friends I have made here has been a blessing to me. Full Story
Girls involved with TSA, but more are needed
Dear Editor: I would like to reply to the letter, Why no girls in SHS TSA? I would simply like to say that as the parent of the Technology Student Association's former state president, I am actually very impressed and encouraged to see all the participation by both boys and girls. Full Story
Vote yes on EMS, no on fire levy
Dear Editor: We are concerned citizens, who support the Camano Island Fire and Rescue EMS levy, which expires 12/31/09, even though services on the south end will not improve with its passage. We are one island: Camano Island, not south or north end. Full Story
Agencies need to get by on less
Dear Editor: Like a great many people on Camano Island, I opened my ballot recently and found a sales tax increase proposal and two property tax levies. I have no doubt that a compelling case can be made for each of these proposals, but in reality when times are tough we all have to make do with less, even less of the things we need. Full Story
Vote yes on EMS levy
Dear Editor: On Oct. 3, 2006, I had an extreme allergic reaction to medication. Fortunately I was by the Elger Bay Café and knew that the fire station was very close. I believe it was Crew C assisting me that day. I arrived at the Country Club Fire Station in a state of panic, rapidly progressing with the symptoms of anaphylactic shock. Full Story
The Viking sign looks better
Dear Editor: I wrote a letter of concern regarding the messy sign and unsafely maintained property in the Viking Village Shopping Center. Since that time changes have happened, so in fairness I am again writing to note the improvements. Full Story
Should hired hand expect a free lunch?
Dear Editor: I have had an ad in the local paper to get garden help for $12 an hour. I am over 80 years old— wish I could turn the clock back several years. My husband will turn 89 next month. I am a caregiver for my husband and work very hard to keep my "better half" of 61 years of marriage at home. He has very advanced Alzheimer's, dementia and diabetes. Full Story
Better response times, less insurance costs
Dear Editor: I am writing to you in support of the two measures on the Aug. 18 ballot for all Camano Island residents. Anyone who is not in favor of these issues should look around the neighborhoods in which we live and see how vulnerable we are to a catastrophic fire. Full Story
Jack Gunter got it all wrong
Dear Editor: I can't believe you gave Jack Gunter so much space in your paper to promote his heretical views on the origins of life and Ballard. Sure, his drawings are fanciful and colorful, and his storytelling ability is well above average, but pigs? Pigs? Full Story
Thanks to Viking Village from SMS
Dear Editor: Stanwood Middle School Parent Teacher Organization thanks Viking Village for the $1,500.00 donation towards the annual High Honor Birch Bay field trip. Viking Village supported the academic achievement of SMS students who earned a 3.5 grade point average or higher during the second and third grading periods to attend the field trip. Full Story
