No wall of shame after dousing flames
Dear Editor:
Around 11:30 p.m. I noticed flames from burning driftwood just 25 feet from my cabin and a neighbor's home.
Over an hour earlier, I had completely put out a small contained fire and was ready to fall asleep.
Apparently, the wind had blown sparks under the nearby brush and driftwood and a roaring blaze was out of control.
For the first time in my life I had to call 911.
Within minutes at least eight firefighters showed up to put out the fire and chainsawed some big logs to ensure its demise.
When the firefighters finished the job, I thought I would get a big lecture, maybe a fine and a photo would be taken of me to put on the wall of shame at the precinct.
But to my shock and surprise, the firefighters were kinds, friendly and even supportive
At my request, they didn't sound the sirens on their way; they didn't interrogate or blame me.
In fact, a firefighter told me that the fire I had started was perfectly legal and he thanked me for calling 911. He said the department is available for the purpose of putting out fires like mine.
Their kindness really put me at ease and I was so relieved when they saved the property without humiliating me!
I've always voted yes on EMS levies thinking it was the right thing to do. Now I will vote yes with conviction after my encounter with the fire department.
And I will encourage all my friends and neighbors to absolutely, positively, no questions asked, vote yes on the upcoming levy.
