Fishing for salmon opens August 1

Everyone is looking forward to the opening of coho and pink salmon season Aug. 1 in areas 8.1 and 8.2, but crabbing continues to be the major focus. Crab pots are being filled in deeper waters, at 60-90 feet, using turkey and/or salmon parts. Many reports of poached pots continue.

If possible, stay within view of your pots and partake in the excellent flounder fishing. Night crawlers, soft plastics, and herring reward folks with their 15 daily limit in sandy areas. We received a report of a 14-pounder from the Bubble this week. Mooching/jigging, or trolling purple haze flasher/squid combos are successful.

Fishing deep at about 10 to 20 feet from the bottom is where to find the chinook. Reports of 30 plus pounders using flasher/squid combos or flasher/Coho Killer. Use green glow, jelly fish, purple haze, apple core, blue spatterback and white lightening.

Fishing is red hot in Seiku, for most anyhow. Grand Slam Bucktails, chartreuse spatterback and Cotton Candy Coho Killers, and blue or green squid/flasher are working great.
