EARLY HISTORY
Gladys Hevly was born July 29, 1899 in Seattle and came to Silvana in the late 1920s where she was a dairy farm wife and during WWII, was chief observer for the Silvana Observation Post, looking for enemy planes.
100 YEARS AGO (1909)
Erling T. Jacobson was born July 29, 1909 in East Stanwood and he later taught school in Stanwood. A harness maker and shoe repairman, Andrew Simonson moved to Stanwood from Brondusler, Denmark.
90 YEARS AGO (1919)
Freeborn Lutheran Church announced that a recent immigrant from Trondheim, Norway, Fred Ausenhus of Pleasant Hill District, has joined the church.
80 YEARS AGO (1929)
The Richfield Company had new incandescent signs along coast roads including one at Stanwood, with a tower of words eight and one-half feet tall.
70 YEARS AGO (1939)
Ole Odegard recalled that he was one of the head fallers that cut the large section of fir tree, which still sits on the east hill facing East Stanwood.
60 YEARS AGO (1949)
Everett and Eileen Hitt moved to Stanwood in 1949 where they owned Hanson's Café for 16 years, then opened Hitt Well Drilling. Mrs. Ben Wentland has a nursing home in Cedarhome. The Jones Motor Co. moved from Stanwood to Norman.
50 YEARS AGO (1959)
Tun Kyi of Burma and Mohamed Youssefy of Iran are two International Farm youth exchange students here. The woodshed alongside Mark Clark Bridge went up in flames. Market Street widening started.
40 YEARS AGO (1969)
This newspaper carried one of the first pictures taken by a hand-held camera of a television screen showing astronauts on the moon. Jay John Couch is operating a Scout camp on Camano, where he teaches log cabin construction.
30 YEARS AGO (1979)
Work started on the storm sewer line that will see 271st Street rebuilt from the east end of town to the west end. Camano Islanders can speak out at a South Camano Grange meeting on the proposed county subdivision ordinance.
20 YEARS AGO (1989)
Camano Co-op Water and Power Co. reminded members to conserve water again. A gazebo in memory of Amanda Conover was dedicated on the Stanwood Library front lawn.
10 YEARS AGO (1999)
A question before the city council is, "should the city buy the SeaFirst Bank parking lot?" Is. Co. now has seven reserve deputies assigned to Camano.
