The annual Stanwood-Camano Community Fair parade begins 11 a.m. at the city parking lot at the east end of town and will go along Florence Road (84th Ave. NW). The construction company will open up the closed area so the parade can proceed as usual. The parade will then enter 271st Street NW from Florence Road and proceed west on 271st Street to the "Y," then right onto 271st Street NW. The units will then turn right (north) onto 99th Avenue NW, and turn left (west) onto 272nd Place NW to go past Josephine Sunset Home. The parade will continue west on 272nd and end at 102nd Avenue NW.

Members sought for Design Stanwood

Design Stanwood is looking for new members. Their current projects include the train service to/from Seattle and Vancouver, B.C., plus an opening celebration, The Taste of Port Susan, improvements to Highway 532 and the Mark Clark Bridge, attracting tourism from the SnoGold Olympic Games coming to Vancouver, B.C. next year, providing beautification and way-finding signs for downtown, and planning for and improving parks and pathways. The public's interest, suggestions and participation are welcome. Memberships are available for students, seniors, families, businesses and community members in general. Get your t-shirts in time for the fair

With original art by Mary Mac Lee, the 2009 Fair T-shirts are now available at the Eagles Nest Custom Embroidery, at 9520 271st St. NW, in Stanwood. The theme this year is "The 3 Best Days of Summer." The official color is royal blue, but shirts are available in other colors also in sizes for children and up to size 3x.

Summit Academy open house next week

An open house is planned at Summit Academy Wed., Aug. 5, 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Stanwood Senior and Community Center, north of the high school. The academy offers small class sizes, a 12:1 student teacher ratio and a rigorous, interdisciplinary curriculum that is individualized and responsive to the needs and talents of each student. Live music Saturday night at hotel

One of the "most sought after blues talents in the Northwest" Mark Dufresne plays at the Stanwood Hotel Saloon starting 9 p.m. Sat., Aug. 1. The Washington Blues Society has awarded him for best vocalist, songwriter and harmonica more than any other artist. No cover charge. Concession at movies benefit youth

Free outdoor movie nights at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church are Thursdays July 30, Aug. 6 and 13; movies begin at dusk. Bring your own blanket, chairs and dress for the weather. All movies will be PG or G rated. All money raised at the concession stand will help youth attend World Youth Day in Spain summer of 2011.

'A tropical invasion' program Saturday

A summer camp opportunity

Young Aviators Summer Camp is back by popular demand at Out of the Blue Aviation, at Arlington Airport. Spots are available for the weeks of July 27-31 and Aug 10-14. Kids ages 12-18 with an interest in aviation are encouraged to apply for one or more weeks. Each week includes hands-on aviation training, a field trip, and a flight lesson in a four-seat aircraft. Summerfest 2009 at Warm Beach

Students need host homes in Stanwood

Charla Mosbrucker is seeking host homes for two foreign exchange students in the Council on International Exchange program and due to school and program deadlines, the students need to be placed by Aug. 1. Mosbrucker recently attended a CIEE training in Washington, D.C. and has been with the non-profit for 10 years, successfully placing high school exchange students with host families for many Snohomish County schools. Stanwood space program set to launch

Stanwood High Altitude Research Club (SHARC) will be holding an organizational meeting Thurs., Aug. 6, 6 - 7 p.m. at the Stanwood Library meeting room. The club, whose goal is to send a payload into near space via weather balloon, is open to all ages and abilities.
