Friends of Camano Island Parks volunteers will be hosting a work party at Camano Island state parks next week. Meet at 9:30 a.m. Tues., Aug. 4, at the Camano Island State Park ranger station. Bring lunch; beverage and dessert provided. Newcomers are welcome to join FOCIP in work party efforts to improve Camano Island parks. AARP safe driving class August 7
A safe driving class is offered by AARP from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fri., Aug. 7 at the Camano Senior and Community Center, This is an eight-hour course. At the completion of the course, students are eligible for a state mandated reduction in car insurance premiums. Many insurance companies will give a discount to anyone taking the class, regardless of age; however, the amount of discount varies so check with your insurance company. A class fee is payable to the instructor.
L ine dancing for beginners, others
A four-week session of line dancing lessons runs Aug. 5-28 at Camano Country Club, 1243 South Beach Dr. The Wednesday classes begin at 6:45 p.m. for beginners and 7:30 p.m. for intermediate. There is a fee for both members and non-members.
L ibrary summer programs continue
Young artists will learn about famous artists and create a masterpiece, in Pop to Picasso, Wed., July 29 at 11 a.m. On Fri. July 31, 1 p.m., storyteller Jill Johnson entertains with "fantastic" stories.
Calling all dirty dogs to CASA
C.A.S.A. will be hosting its annual dog wash at the shelter Sat., Aug. 15, 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.
W omen's Club meeting to be Aug. 10
The monthly meeting/program/luncheon of the Camano Country Club's Women Club takes place Mon., Aug. 10, 10 a.m. A demonstration of "flower pounding" and participation class will be presented by Opal Cooke. Lunch will be prepared by the Women's Club board, bridge follows at 12:30 p.m.
Water advisory committee meets
A Water Resource Advisory Committee meeting is Thurs., Aug. 6, 3 - 5 p.m., at City of Oak Harbor Public Works facility, 1400 NE 16 Ave. in Oak Harbor. The public is invited to attend the monthly meeting of WRAC, which is an Island County citizen advisory group that provides oversight to water resources, salmon recovery and marine resource programs on Camano and Whidbey islands. This month, WRAC will review and approve salmon recovery projects in Island County. For information call 360-678-7888.
Tourism grant applications due Aug. 31
The Board of Island County Commissioners are accepting applications now for the 2010 tourism lodging tax grant program. Applications are due in the Island County office by 4:30 p.m. Aug. 31. Applications sent by fax or e-mail will not be accepted. Call the commissioner's office for an application or for information.
South End String Band at car show
The collectors car show and flea market 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Aug. 8, features the South End String Band, Walt's pork butt BBQ, and a beer garden by the Diamond Knott Brewery at the Camano Senior and Community Center. Open house on fire levy, construction
Camano Island Fire and Rescue will hold an open house 6 p.m. Tues., July 28 at the Camano County Club clubhouse at 1243 Beach Dr., on Camano Island.
