It was standing room only as Island County Sheriff Mark Brown held a meeting to discuss concerns surrounding escaped felon Colton Harris-Moore at the Mabana Fire Station last Tuesday night. Brown said the fear and focus placed on the 18-year-old fugitive is disproportionate to the larger danger from other criminals. Full Story
Double digit unemployment first in SnoCo
Unemployment in Snohomish County reached double digits in June for the first time since 1984. At 10.1 percent, a total of 38,850 residents did not have a job. In comparison, the state's average unemployment rate was almost a full percentage point lower, at 9.2 percent. Full Story
Fair season HEATS up

Though rain seems synonymous with fairs in the Pacific Northwest, the Silvana Fair takes pride in the fact it has never been rained on. Saturday was no exemption to that record, when temperatures soared into the high 80s during the 62nd annual event. All activities took place at the Viking Hall on Pioneer Highway in Silvana and on the adjacent fields. Every child who entered an exhibit or animal here got a ribbon at the free community fair. Fair parade route announced The annual Stanwood-Camano Community Fair parade begins 11 a.m. at the city parking lot at the east end of town and will go along Florence Road (84th Ave. NW). The construction company will open up the closed area so the parade can proceed as usual. Full Story
ARNOLD HAAKON LUNNUM
Arnold Haakon Lunnum was born March 2, 1917 on the family farm on Happy Valley Road, Silvana, and he passed on July 21, 2009 in Stanwood. He leaves his wife of 61 years, Lena, his son, Duane and Duane's wife, Margaret as well as niece Joan Peterson and nephew Ron Lunnum and their families. Full Story
Nels Konn eru p Dec. 4, 1916 - Jul y 21, 2009
Nels Konnerup, beloved husband, dad, grandpa and great grandpa, died at his home on Camano, July 21, 2009. He was born in Everett on Dec. 4, 1916 and was raised in Kennicott, Alaska. He became a copper miner at 17, then decided to attend Washington State University and graduated as a veterinarian in 1942. Full Story
Nanc y Coff ey
Nancy Coffey, 59, died July 22 at the University of Washington Medical Center after a long eight-month battle from a bad double lung transplant. Her husband, Jim, was at her side, guiding her through a very peaceful exit. She amazed her family, friends, nurses and doctors with her strength and will to live. She will be missed by so many.
