Renew levy for valuable services
Dear Editor: Residents of Camano Island are being given the opportunity to ensure that our fire and emergency medical services (EMS) are maintained at their present level and are improved in the key area of response time. On Aug. 18 voters will be asked to approve two separate levies: one for fire and one for EMS. Full Story
Bad timing on levy requests
Dear Editor: Despite the fact that many people are struggling in this terrible economy, some government agencies are asking Camano Island voters to approve several large tax increases in August and November. Full Story
Kudos to Merrill Gardens' staff
Dear Editor: I believe when exceptional service is given, it should be publicly acknowledged. I want to give extra special thanks to the staff at Stanwood's Merrill Gardens and especially the wonderful staff at Garden House. Everyone there is so friendly and care so much for all the residents with extra affection and attention. Full Story
Library manager thanks Friends
Dear Editor: Many, many thanks to the Camano Island Library Friends for their hard work to assure another very successful book sale for our second anniversary. This year, the Friends made twice what they made last year! Full Story
President Obama, not Mr. Obama
Dear Editor: Didn't we recently elect a man as President of the United States? Somehow this news has made little impact on many of the national broadcasting media because they seem to feel that this title doesn't quite suit him. They persist on calling him "Mr." Obama. Full Story
Please consider other options to fireworks on 4th
Dear Editor: At about 5 a.m. July 5, I was awakened by the sound of voices outside my bedroom window. Looking out, I saw Camano Island Fire and Rescue personnel walking the bluff. The reason was quickly apparent when I realized that the fog drifting up from below was actually smoke. A man on Whidbey Island had noticed it first and called it in. Full Story
Pennies for Peace raised $171.46
Dear Editor: At Elger Bay Elementary I did a book share on the book "Three Cups of Tea" by Greg Mortenson. That book inspired me to get started on a "Pennies for Peace" drive in my reading class. "Pennies for Peace'" is a nonprofit organization that helps poor villages in Pakistan and Afghanistan build schools to educate their children. Full Story
Let's continue support of fire and EMS levies
Dear Editor: This letter is written to encourage all your Camano readers to support the Fire/ EMS services on the island in the upcoming levies. Our community has grown exponentially in the 25 years I have lived here, and today we are more dependent on our emergency services than ever. Full Story
Thanks for the successful book sale
Dear Editor: On Sat., June 27, the Camano Island Library Friends celebrated the second anniversary of the library at Terry's Comer with a book sale. The event was a great success due to the varied contributions of so many community members. Full Story
Teacher questions the meaning of independent
Dear Editor: Do you really mean it? There's an old saying where I come from that goes: Say what you mean and mean what you say. Since 1991 I've been teaching language arts, usually to students whose first language is Spanish. Full Story
Vote yes on CIFR levies
Dear Editor: On Aug. 18, the Camano Island fire department has two very important levies on the ballot. The first is for an increase in the permanent fire levy from the present rate of 84 cents per $1,000 of assessed value to $1.20. The second levy is to continue the 50 cent levy for Emergency Response Service, or EMS, which expires at the end of the year. Full Story
Cartoon offered political balance
Dear Editor: Last week's cartoon by the Eggers was a breath of fresh air. Finally there just might be a balance coming to combat the bias in the media. As for the Eggers, I'm sorry to say that the socialist, or should I say Marxist, agenda this President has been pushing down America's throats is going to bankrupt this once great nation. Full Story
Why no girls in SHS TSA
Dear Editor: The article about the Stanwood High School Technology Student Association demonstrated how important these clubs are. Full Story
Thanks to the farmers
Dear Editor: Thanks to all the local farmers for taking the time to put identification signs in their fields for passersby to view. It's fun and educational to know what's growing (and grazing) out there. We appreciate you farmers for all your hard work! Full Story
Put single payer back on table
Dear Editor: I would like to share two things about health care reform. First, I attended a forum with eight speakers in Burlington sponsored by the League of Women Voters with Patricia Terry, RN, of Camano Island, as moderator. Full Story
Go to La Conner next 4th of July
Dear Editor: In response to Ken Johnson's letter to the editor regarding a lack of a fireworks show in Stanwood, I agree with him. The city of Stanwood has a long ways to go before it is equal to all the small towns around us. Full Story
Viking ship by Norway Lodge
Dear Editor: The front page picture of the 4th of July parade was very good; however, I feel you should have checked the facts. Full Story
Why does city allow graffiti on business sign?
Dear Editor: Does anyone know the owner of the Viking Village property? I am wondering if they have a special dispensation from the city. After the debacle of the car wash sign on SR 532 and the city's handling of that situation, I find it strange and troubling that the red spray-painted Viking Village sign remains. Full Story
Global warning can wait, economy first
Dear Editor: The President's proposed Climate Change and Energy Bill is a disaster and will relegate America to being a second-rate power. Our economic survival trumps all other environmental factors. We need all of the oil we can get that is ours, such as from the Arctic Ocean off Alaska and the Gulf of Mexico. Full Story
