Stanwood water passes muster
The city of Stanwood has released the 2008 water quality report and marks look good. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards were met or exceeded in almost all categories. Arsenic, present from the erosion of natural deposits in the ground, was detected in acceptable amounts. Full Story
Hohf found guilty in shooting neighbor face
Russell Hohf, of Stanwood, was found guilty of first-degree assault in Snohomish County Superior Court. Hohf, 51, was convicted of shooting Kevin Perrin, of Stanwood, in the face using a small-caliber pistol on Oct. 14, 2007. Full Story
State trooper injured in golf tournament
Washington State Patrol (WSP) trooper Derek Anderson, 28, of Stanwood, was injured in a golf cart accident in Wenatchee, while participating in a benefit tournament last week. Full Story
Young man booked on child molestation
Stanwood Police reported the following calls July 6 - 16: • A 19-year-old Tacoma man was booked into jail for child molestation in third degree, he was arrested in the 8400 block of Park Drive on July 7. Full Story

In "Local conservation districts seek funding in Island County," the grant the Snohomish Conservation District recently received should have been attributed to the Department of Ecology. The low impact development work the grant was for should have referred to pervious concrete. Full Story
Bank robber sentenced to federal prison
David Hayes, 26, formerly of Stanwood, was sentenced to three years in federal prison after pleading guilty to four counts of bank robbery July 10. United States District Court Judge John Coughenour passed down the sentence in a courtroom packed with family and friends. Full Story
Domestic violence conviction carries hefty sentence
Donald E. Clark, of Snohomish, pled guilty to multiple charges stemming from domestic violence against a Camano Island woman in Island County Superior Court July 13. Judge Vickie Churchill handed down what prosecutors termed an "exceptional sentence" of 14 years in prison. Full Story
Eyman's Initiative 1033 cleared for November ballot
Secretary of State Sam Reed announced on Wednesday that Initiative 1033, Tim Eyman's measure dealing with revenue limits and property tax relief, has enough valid signatures to qualify for the November election. Full Story

Island County Sheriff's deputies on Camano Island responded to the following recently: • Workers at a construction site on S. Iverson Beach Road reported the theft of a "porta-potty" July 13. Full Story
PUD helps residents install solar energy
On the roof of Ana and Blaine Chesterfield's home, newly installed solar panels are producing electricity. On a sunny summer day, the panels produce about 24 to 25 kilowatt-hours, Blaine said. The family uses about 22 kilowatt-hours a day, meaning they are adding energy into the electrical grid. Full Story

The Nature Conservancy is offering an opportunity right here in Stanwood to answer a call from the White House to volunteer on behalf of the environment. Academy graduation
A firefighter from North County Regional Fire Authority is preparing to graduate with 20 others from the Washington State Patrol Fire Training Academy, according to State Fire Marshal Michael Matlick. Island County voters hold transit fate in their hands
When it comes to mass transportation, there is no such thing as a free ride. On Aug. 18, Island County voters will decide the fate of a sales tax increase aimed at providing additional revenue for Island Transit. Camano Island woman convicted of voter fraud
Susan M. Risenhoover, 43, of Camano Island, pled guilty last Monday for violating unqualified person voting, a felony. She mailed in a ballot in last November's presidential election when she was not a registered voter. Full Story
