Annual teddy bear picnic Community members read "Cat in the Hat" and other stories at Stanwood Camano Community Resource Center from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Thurs., July 16. Children and parents are invited to join Senator Mary Margaret Haugen, Commissioner John Dean, Mayor Dianne White, Stanwood children's librarian Joy Feldman, and local author and artist, Keith Yarter, as they read their favorite children's stories. Entries due for Silvana Fair This year's Silvana Fair is Sat., July 25, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. and entries for livestock exhibits are accepted by mail. Indoor exhibits can be entered at Viking Hall on Wed., July 22, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Thursday, July 23, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. only. Posters and educational displays are accepted at Peace Lutheran Church in Silvana on Wed., July 22, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Thurs., July 23, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. only. Demonstrations must be pre-entered. Senior center thrift store re-opening Former Lincoln Hill basketball stars Pug Lund and Peter Henning will be given special recognition at the ribbon cutting of The Center Court, the new name for the thrift store at the Stanwood Community and Senior Center, at 7430 276th St. NW, north of Stanwood High School. The ceremony will take place 10 a.m., Mon., July 20, with Mayor Diane White officiating. The new name highlights the historical significance of the location of the thrift store in the original gymnasium of Lincoln Hill School, built in 1938. The thrift store is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
Stanwood Fair exhibits accepted Stanwood-Camano Community Fair will start accepting indoor exhibits Tues., July 28, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Wed., July 29, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Categories include art, photography, baking, sewing, crafts, vegetables, eggs and flowers, and demonstrations are encouraged. All entries must be made or grown since last year's fair. Ribbons, rosettes, trophies and cash are awarded and judging is done on the entry's own merit, not against other exhibits. Bluegrass festival starts July 17 The Darrington Bluegrass Festival is July 17-19 at the Darrington Music Park, three miles west of Darrington, Take I-5 exit 208 and drive about 30 miles east on Hwy 530. For more information see the Web site at www.glacierview.net/blue.
NWSSA shows sculptures July 18
The Northwest Stone Sculptor Symposium at Camp Brotherhood will show off the results of a week of sculpting with a public sculpture walk Sat. July 18. Camp Brotherhood is located just south of Lake McMurray on SR 9.

Stanwood Camano Fair Parade Annual Stanwood Camano Community Fair Parade will be held Sat., Aug. 1, beginning at 11 a.m. in downtown Stanwood. This year's theme is "Community Pride" in honor of all those who give so much to this community throughout the year. Grand marshals this year will be local police chiefs and fire chiefs, in recognition of all the first responders that worked above and beyond during the snowstorms and the flooding that hit our community. Grief and support group meetings An informal discussion and sharing about the impact of loss and the grief experienced is offered by Skagit Hospice, on the first and third Tuesdays each month, from 12:30 - 2 p.m., July 7 and 21. Pre-registration is required for sessions focussing on the loss of a child (at any age). That group meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays each month, 5:30 - 7 p.m. July 14 and 28. Housing Hope's self help home ownership program is recruiting families for The Crest at Copper Station in Stanwood. House payments are subsidized based on qualifications. No down payment or closing costs required for those who qualify. A family with an income ranging from $32,985 to $84,500 may be eligible. Fair needs trophies
Anyone who has some old baseball, bowling, horse, or any other kind of trophy that is simply gathering dust, you might consider donating them to the Stanwood-Camano Fair.
Fair organizers recycle old trophies for their horse show and they could use some more.

School District 401 board meeting Stanwood-Camano School District 401 will hold a regular board meeting at 11:30 a.m. July 14 in the Administrative & Resource Center board room, 26920 Pioneer Hwy, Stanwood. There will be an executive session to consider the selection of a site or the acquisition of real estate by lease or purchase. The discussion is expected to last about 30 minutes. "Ready Readers" family story times for 18 months and up are offered Wednesdays through Aug. 5, 10:30 a.m. Story times help children get ready to read with stories, songs and rhymes with a parent or caregiver. A fun craft project follows each story time. At 9:30 a.m. Wednesdays "Ready Readers" for newborns through 24 months requires a caregiver.
