Assault weapon should have been locked up inside

Dear Editor:

I was surprised to hear that an Island County deputy's patrol car, that is normally parked in front of his home in full view of East Camano Drive, was vandalized.

I was even more surprised to learn that a laptop computer, digital camera, cell phone and loaded assault rifle were stolen from inside the car.

Apparently no alarm sounded, as the thief had time to cut wires and break the rifle lock.

As citizens, we are constantly reminded by the police to not leave valuables in our cars. Why was $6,000 worth of equipment, including a loaded weapon, allowed to be left overnight in plain sight? That equipment should have been inside the house with the rifle locked up.

As a resident of the south end, I am angry that, as a result of this incident, we may now have an armed criminal roaming the area.
