Gardeners invited to clinic Saturday Sat., June 27, there will be a Master Gardener clinic at Orchard's Nursery, located at the west end of Stanwood. Bring your gardening questions and/or samples of plants between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The clinic has WSU-trained gardeners ready to help with gardening issues.
Boating course offered, register now America's Boating Course (ABC) is a basic boating course produced through a partnership between the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the United States Power Squadrons®. Classes will be Wednesdays, July 8 - Aug. 5, 7-9 p.m. at the Stanwood Community and Senior Center, 7430 276th SW. Participants will learn everything from boat maintenance and trailering to operation and regulations. There is a registration fee plus a cost at the door for materials. The Americas Boating Course meets all U.S. and Canadian education requirements and qualifies for the Washington State Boater Safety education card.

Young aviators summer camp offered
Out of the Blue Aviation at Arlington Airport, is offering Young Aviators Summer Camp for the weeks of July 6-10, July 27-31, and Aug. 10-14. Kids age 12-18 who have some interest in aviation are encouraged to apply for one or more weeks of the program. Each week includes hands-on aviation training, a field trip, and a flight lesson. Driver class for age 50-plus An AARP Driver Safety Class is scheduled at Warm Beach Free Methodist Church, 30815 Marine Dr., Tues. and Wed., June 23 and 24. This 1 to 5 p.m. class is designed for adults 50+ years of age. Participants work through an interesting, interactive curriculum emphasizing defensive driving techniques. A fee is charged to cover the cost of materials. AARP members receive a discount when presenting their membership number at the time of registration. You do not need to be an AARP member to enroll. L ocal community grants deadline
The Stanwood-Camano Area Foundation awards community grants to nonprofit organizations that benefit the residents of Stanwood and Camano Island. Grants are now available, and all applications are due to the foundation on or before July 15. Previous recipients include the Camano Animal Shelter Association (CASA), Josephine care facility, and the Island County Sheriff's Office. Grant applications and guidelines can be found at

Annual Art in the Barn show near Oso The fifth annual "Art in the Barn" event is Sat. and Sun., June 27-28, sponsored by the Arlington Arts Council and hosted by the Yantis family on their farm at 20412 SR 530 NE, Arlington. Event hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Although the barn collapsed in December due to excessive snow, artists will set up tents among the gardens and orchard area. Every year the show has grown in popularity due, in great part, to the consistent patronage, but also the fine art, artists and overall fun atmosphere.
