Schmidt sets new record for SHS in WA State Decathlon Championships

Stanwood senior-to-be Kale Schmidt surpassed the 6,000- point mark in the Washington State Decathlon Championships held recently at Lake Stevens High School.

Schmidt scored 6,059 points, a new Stanwood school record, and became the first local boy to ever score over 6,000 points using international implements. "He also is only the second Spartan boy to ever win the prestigious meet, joining Ron Olson, who won in 1986. Congratulations to him," said coach Paul Johnson.
Schmidt's top-scoring events included 22 feet, 6.5 inches in the long jump (a new SHS school record) for 783 points, 51.4 in the 400 meters for 751 points, 6-foot- 4 in the high jump for 740 points and 4:40.0 in the 1500 for 680 points.
Trevor Fekkes took 21st with 4,619 overall points. He cleared 5-foot-8 in the high jump (569 points), 5:03 in the 1500 (543) and 17.8 in the 110 high hurdles (539).
Finishing 26th was Josh Entwisle with 4,509 points. He ran an 11.6 in the 100 (721 points), 19-3 in the long jump (542) and 17.8 in the 110HH (539).

Andrew Downing was 49th with 3,490 points. His top events: 5-4 (HJ, 488 points), 5:16 (1,500, 471) and 17-6.5 (LJ, 449).
Taking 52nd was Bo Luce. The future junior accumulated 3,366 points. He ran a 12.9 in the 100 (483), leaped 17-8.5 in the long jump (459) and 5-2 in the high jump (449).
Chris Hayes was 55th with 3088 points. His top-scoring events were 126-2 (javelin, 419), 16-11.5 (LJ, 415) and 13.3 (100, 412).
Among the 17 girls competing, future junior Kalina Eveland finished sixth with 4,117 total points.
"After playing tennis at SHS this spring, she decided to return to defend her state title from last year and was our top Lady Spartan finisher," noted Johnson.
Kalina's best events were the high jump (4-8, 544), shot put (31-7, 504) and the discus 84-6 (shot put, 493).
Kaci Jones, a junior at Stanwood High next fall, competed as well. She finished ninth with 3,981 points. The javelin (125- 10, 633), the discus (100-6, 584) and the shot put (33-8, 584) were her highest-scoring events.
