Barbecue to launch community playground

Area children have had their say on the design of a new playground to be built at Freedom Park at Terry's Corner on Camano Island, and now organizers say it is time for adults in the community to make it a reality.

"We all play a crucial role in creating this new asset to our community," said Greg Gilday, the project's coordinator. "Whether you can swing a hammer, sweep a broom or bake cookies, you can make a huge impact."

The public is invited to a free old-fashioned community barbecue to celebrate what will become the new playground Sat., July 11, 1 to 4 p.m. at Freedom Park. Information about the project and the ways people can become involved will be available.

"We will break bread as a community on the very spot where we will break ground in less than a year," Gilday said.

The new playground will be built through donations of time, talent, materials and cash. The project is expected to be complete in five days.

"The build relies on having all of the necessary components and volunteers to make the magic of dreams become reality," said Gilday.

An extensive list of components and opportunities for individuals and businesses is available at www.iHeartParks.org.

Donations may be made to the Stanwood Camano Area Foundation on behalf of the project. For info., phone 360-629-2900.
