Spring athletes garner WesCo All League honors

No less than 19 Spartan athletes were recognized as firstteam members of Western Conference 4A North Division following the 2009 spring season. An impressive number of other Stanwood High athletes were placed on the second and honorable mention squads as well.

Megan LaLone was voted to the first team tennis team as a girls' singles player. Megan finished fourth in the state championships as a freshman this year.

Joining her were teammates Anne Hamiter and Kallen Shaughnessy, a pair of Lady Spartans who were named to the first-team doubles roster as a result of their success in district competition. Hamiter is a senior, while Shaughnessy is a junior.

Another senior, Jackie Afualo, was honored as a first-team

girls' golfer. Afualo also appeared at State for the second time this spring.

Male members of the WesCo track and field first team were Robert Hanke (110 hurdles, 300 hurdles, 4X400 relay), Kale Schmidt (long jump, 4X400 relay), Nick Olsson (4X400 relay) and Mason Wrolstad (4X400 relay). All four thinclads participated at Star Track XXVII this spring.

Female tracksters who earned all-league, first-team honors in addition to competing at State included sophomore Minna Fields (1600 and 3200), Corinne Teichgrab (400), Trista Peterson (shot put) and freshman Kaci Jones (javelin).

Brandon Thomas, a senior outfielder for the baseball Spartans, was the only local representative on the first All-WesCo baseball team.

Junior defender Jorge Garcia and junior goal keeper Dalton Alumbaugh earned boys' soccer first-team honors for the Spartan booters.

The Lady Spartan fastpitch nine claimed four of the top 12 first-team spots on the All- WesCo 4A North Division team. Seniors Jordan Nemo and Carly Bosse' were selected at shortstop and third base, respectively, tively, while second baseman Tori Kriegel, a sophomore, and junior chucker Brittany Jeans filled out two other roster spots.

Chosen to all-league, second teams in their respective athletic endeavors were Sam Bingham (catcher, softball), Corinne Stillman (first base, softball), Lyndsay Burrows (outfielder, softball), Kody Henderson (defender, soccer), Tom Enquist (designated hitter, baseball), Michael Vaughan (utility, baseball), Trista Peterson (discus, track), Kale Schmidt (300 hurdles, high jump, track) and Nick Olsson (400, track).

Honorable Mention was given to Spartans Corinne Teichgrab (100, 4X400, track), Natalie Bergstrom (4X400, track), Hailey Storbeck (4X400, track), Riley Henderson (4X400, track), Kaci Jones (discus, track), Nic Jacobs (catcher, baseball), Walter Thomas (outfielder, pitcher, baseball), Tom Enquist (first base, baseball) and Shawna Hochstetler (outfielder, softball).
