'Mr. No-No' offers summer safety tips
By SCOTT M. CIRILLO Special to the NEWS
As parents or caregivers, we do our best to prevent mishaps from occurring to our children.
Sometimes we get too comfy thinking our children are more grown up than they really are, and that is when fatal mistakes are made.
The following are a few summer safety tips for safety-conscious parents:
Sun safety
• Keep your child out of the sun between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
• Place a little round band-aid on your child's shoulder. Apply sunscreen from head to toe. Take a peek under the band-aid after 10 minutes. If there is no burning, check under the band-aid in 15 minutes, then every 30 minutes afterwards. If you notice a burn or tan, take him out of the sun.
• Keep your child hydrated. Freeze water bottles halfway, then fill the other half with water to take out with you.
Swimming/water safety
• Always have an adult that can swim very well watch your child.
• The best scenario would be if the adult were certified in infant and child CPR.
Escalator safety
• When on an escalator, always stand in front of your child when you're going down. When going up, always stand behind your child.
• Always take your child out of the stroller before you get on the escalator.
• Do not let your child sit on the steps of the escalator!
Mr. No-No realizes some of these tips might be commonsense, but you would be amazed how many children end up getting hurt. For more safety tips and other child safety issues, visit www.TheThinkingCAPPFoundation. org.
