100 YEARS AGO (1909)
Rev. W. S. Hanlein was pastor of the Methodist Church in Stanwood. When F. R. Monte House came from Alaska to visit the Pacific Yukon Exposition in Seattle, he had no idea that he would settle down in Stanwood - but he did.
90 YEARS AGO (1919)
Louis Stubb of Norman served with the U.S. Navy during WWI. Oscar Sponheim of Stanwood graduated this year with the SHS class of 1919.
80 YEARS AGO (1929)
The annual rodeo dance at East Stanwood had Harold Davis and his Buckaroos providing music, and at 11 p.m., a famous bucking hose was ridden outside of the dance hall. The Woodland Service Station was given a house warming, finished in stucco (located about an eighth of a mile from today's fairgrounds). The MacMarrs store also underwent a cleaning, fresh paint inside and out.
70 YEARS AGO (1939)
Hansen's Radio Service added a darkroom and line photographic development equipment (site of today's Golden Pavilion). The East Stanwood ag class visited a Florence farm to see a demo of overhead irrigation.
60 YEARS AGO (1949)
Camano Island veterans of WWI and WWII formed an American Legion Post on the island. Myron Rice dug a well for the South Camano Grange, at a cost of $5 a foot, members individually paying for a foot of digging.
50 YEARS AGO (1959)
Park Funds of $20,000 was appropriated for road development at Camano Island State Park, and over two miles of road from Juniper Beach to Terry's Corner was included in a $112,300 contract.
40 YEARS AGO (1969)
Thunder Ridge Development was announced; also formed was the club at Camp Grande. The community flagpole in the triangle adjacent to Larson's Shell Service Station (now site of Wells Fargo Bank) was dedicated on Memorial Day.
30 YEARS AGO (1979)
Mabana voters decided against recall of Mabana Port commissioners. Lynne McGuire was valedictorian and Ward Succo, salutatorian, of the class of 1979. Resident census at Josephine Sunset Home neared capacity with the completion of the new addition.
20 YEARS AGO (1989)
Jason Monhollen placed fifth at the state track meet. Koetje Agency was to cover Island Co. government insurance needs. Stanwood school board broke ground for the new Twin City Elementary. Rockhopper Junction opened in Stanwood. An airport committeeman said a regional facility wouldn't fit here. Conway Grade School north of Stanwood was 50 years old.
10 YEARS AGO 1999)
A Camano auto crash victim, with serious head injuries and in a coma, made a comeback against all odds. Stanwood doctor Julia Raneri was on a team that went to Honduras after the hurricane left 7,000 dead and a million homeless.
