Robert Hanke's double placement in the hurdles events at Star Track XXVII led the local boys' contingent over three days of topflight track and field competition at Mount Tahoma High School last week.
Hanke raced to a second place in the 300 intermediate hurdles last Saturday with a time of 38.57 and a seventh place in the 110 low hurdles in 14.93 seconds on Friday.
"Robert's hard work throughout the year in the hurdles really paid off," noted head coach Jordan Sneva. "I think his diet of Skittles and candy bars does him well!"
Another junior, Kale Schmidt, leaped to a near-school record distance of 22 feet, 4.5 inches in the long jump and grabbed seventh among a highly-talented group of 4A leapers.
"With that distance, he'll have something to shoot for as he strives to qualify for state again next year," said Sneva.
Other Spartans who were state qualifiers but failed to place included Mason Wrolstad, Cameron Redmond, Nick Olsson and Michael Erickson.
