Lalone rallies to place fourth in state tennis Playing in the state 4A girls' tennis championships, Megan LaLone recovered quickly from a first-round loss to Meghan Cassens of Decatur to win four straight consolation matches and place fourth overall as a Stanwood High freshman. Full Story
Koetje takes fifth in state tennis tourney After reaching the semi-finals in the Class 4A Boys' State Tennis Tournament, Stanwood High's Kyle Koetje lost 6-2 and 6-0 to Kentwood's Max Manthou, a three-time state champ, and then was upset by Richland Bomber Troy Zuroske 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 to earn fifth place in this, his senior year. Special Olympics Special Olympics swimmers recently attended the state games in Federal Way, bringing home 8 Gold, 10 Silver and 10 Bronze medals, and 5 fourth, 4 fifth, 1 sixth and 1 eighth places. Full Story
Hanke hurdles to 2nd place at Star Track 27 Robert Hanke's double placement in the hurdles events at Star Track XXVII led the local boys' contingent over three days of topflight track and field competition at Mount Tahoma High School last week. Hanke raced to a second place in the 300 intermediate hurdles last Saturday with a time of 38. Full Story
Lady Spart trio places at Star Track XXVII Three different Lady Spartans brought home medals from Star Track XXVII after placing among the top eight 4A competitors in the WIAA state track and field championships last week. Rallying on a refurbished road Bicycles, motorcycles, vintage cars and other vehicles took to Camano Hill Road Saturday morning in a rally to recognize the reconstruction of 3.5 miles of the road. Full Story
Area 8.1, 8.2 fishing report Area 8.1 and 8.2: Bottomfish of good size are still finding their way into the boat, but the lingcod catch has slowed. Though a few fish are being reported from the Deception Pass area, you may try Camano Head with a blue or green label herring. The success rate seems to be better and for many if it is a bit easier to get to. Lingcod closes June 15. Full Story
Area 8.1 and 8.2 fishing report Area 8.1 and 8.2: Lingcod are being caught around the 8.1-8.2 area. Though results are mixed, it is still worth getting out there. The Head and around Hat Island are producing fish. Live bait works great if you can get it, or 4- to 6- ounce leadhead with a twintail will also work well. SAFE! Stanwood/Camano Little League Blue Jays player Brandon Rhoden, a third grader, steals home during a game over Memorial Day weekend at Heritage Park. The Blue Jays (9-10 year olds), are coached by Tim Hatzenbeler. They won 8-1 over the Angels. Full Story
