SR 532 improvement project discussion The public is invited to an open house Mon., June 8 at the high school, 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., when representatives from Dept. of Transportation will discuss the SR 532 improvement project. Crews will work during the day and at night to build truck-climbing lanes, improve intersections and replace the General Mark Clark Bridge. The work will extend from spring 2009 to spring 2011. Saigon survivor to speak at Rotary In 1975, as the Vietnam conflict came to a close with dramatic airlifts from the U.S. Embassy, a 10-year-old girl, Mary Pham, was one of the last to board the helicopters. Wed., May 27, the Stanwood/Camano Rotary Club welcomes Pham to its noon meeting in the school district's board room. The public is invited to attend; lunch is available for a cost.
Sall Hutson benefit concert, auction The South End String Band will perform Sun., May 30, 2 to 4 p.m. at Gerry Andal's Restaurant, 27021 102nd Ave. NW, Stanwood, to help local housepainter Sall Hutson with back surgery bills and mounting debts after being laid off. Bookstore aids Ugandan bead makers The Snow Goose Bookstore and local jewelry maker Joanne Drewsen will sponsor a BeadforLife (BFL) bead and jewelry party Sat., May 30, 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. at the bookstore in downtown Stanwood. BeadforLife is a socially responsible global organization, working with women, all of whom were living on less than $1 a day in extreme poverty. BFL, based in North America and Uganda, has partnered with 300 women as members, women whose efforts are responsible for supporting almost 5,000 others in the climb out of poverty. Community services here for the blind There will be a drop-off site for donated clothing and household items every Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m., at Stanwood Foursquare Church, across from Stanwood Hardware and north of Dairy Queen. Sign-ups wanted for Soap Box Derby The second annual Stanwood-Camano Soap Box Derby will be held June 20, and the call has gone out to drivers, old and new, to dust off their building skills and sign up for the race. The headquarters are set up in the old gas station behind Bob's Market in Stanwood along SR 532. The first clinic was held April 23, and more clinics are planned.
