Fields outdistances all league competitors in 1600 and 3200

Stanwood High distance specialist Minna Fields demonstrated tremendous stamina in winning both the 1600- and 3200-meter races at the WesCo North championships held in Oak Harbor last week.
The sophomore and her fellow Lady Spartans finished second to the Tomahawks of Marysville Pilchuck with 132 points to the Tommies' 142.
Fields ran a 5:07 to win the 1600 and an 11:17.4 to edge Snohomish's Valerie Massie (11:17.6) in the 3200.
Other Spartan victors were Kaci Jones with a 123-11 toss of the javelin, Trista Peterson with a 39-8.5 heft of the shot and Corinne Teichgrab with a 58.4 dash in the 400 meters. Peterson collected the Sparts' sole second place ribbon with a 117-06 flip of the discus.
Teichgrab and Jones, along with the girls' 4X400 relay team, took thirds. Teichgrab, a sophomore sprinter, covered 200 meters in 13.05 seconds, Jones covered 107-07 with her discuss throw, and the latter foursome of Riley Henderson, Hailey Storbeck, Natalie Bergstrom and Teichgrab combined for a 4:07 time in the 1600 relay.
The 4X100 relay squadron of Celia Smith, Grace Sheridan, Kelsey Dingman and Henderson placed fourth with a 50.9 mark as did Christina Lancaster in the pole vault with a clearance of 9 feet and Jones with a 35-06 put of the shot.
Other Spartans who qualified for the district meet are Madison Davis (5th, 2:26, 800), Kelsey Haller (8th, 2:31, 800), Brenda Bingham (8th, 96-0, javelin), Bergstrom (7th, 49.0, 300h), Peterson (6th, 97-06, javelin), Teichgrab (5th, 26.7, 200), Smith (7th, 13.0, 100) and Storbeck (7th, 1:03, 400).
