County commissioners' special session The Board of Island County Commissioners will meet in special session Tues., May 19, 6 p.m. at Camano Senior and Community Center to consider adoption of a new zoning classification called the Camano Gateway Village Zone and development regulations applicable within the new classification following public comment. At 6:30 p.m., commissioners will hold a required public hearing following their approval of Ordinance C-36-09, and consider adoption of any changes to the interim control after public comment on regulating commercial development within the Terry's Corner and Camano Gateway non-residential rural areas of intensive development.

Republican Women hold May meeting Camano Island Women's Republican Club (CIWRC) meets at 12 noon Tues., May 26, at the Lost Lake Community Center, 1469 West Lake Dr. on Camano Island. The Dan Koffman program, "Simple pleasures for special seniors," was previously postponed. CIWRC welcomes new members and visitors from the island, Stanwood and surrounding areas.

Internet safety tips for parent night All parents are invited to an Internet safety parent education night Tues., May 26, 6 to 8 p.m., at the Utsalady Elementary School library. Discussions will be on establishing rules for Internet use at home, teaching your child to never reveal identifying information, and what to do if your child views disturbing content. Detective Ed Wallace, of the Island County Sheriff's Office, is guest speaker, focusing on cyberbullying and online predators. This is a parent-only event; do not bring children, due to mature content of discussions.

'Grow shellfish on your beach' "Growing shellfish on your beach" is the topic of a 7 p.m. talk Wed., May 27, at the Camano Multipurpose Center, 141 N. East Camano Dr. (blue building) . Bill Dewey of Taylor Shellfish Farms will show people how to plant shellfish on their private beaches. This presentation will precede the shellfish seeds sale on Chuckanut Drive June 6, and will be filled with practical details on how to become a successful shellfish grower. Growing veggies for your table Joy Nelson will give a 7 p.m. presentation about growing vegetables Wed., May 20, at the Camano Multipurpose Center, 141 East Camano Dr. (blue building by tennis courts). Nelson is a practicing wildlife habitat steward. She has been growing plants and perennials organically since 1966, and grows herbs and vegetables from seeds. Book drive on for Camano library Book donations are avidly being sought for the second annual Camano Island Library Friends book sale June 27. Any sale-worthy, non-fiction and fiction books or media for kids, teens and adults are needed. Collection boxes or carts are located at the Elger Bay Store, Camano Plaza IGA, the library, and QFC in Stanwood. The sale is one of several projects the group is pursuing to keep the library open long term. This pilot project is funded for three years until June 2010.

Water quality is topic for CARE meeting Camano Action for A Rural Environment will have a discussion on water quality at its 7 p.m. meeting Thurs., May 21 at Terry's Corner Windermere office, at the corner of Sunrise and SR 532/East Camano Drive.
