Two Stanwood High School seniors have been awarded the prestigious Washington Scholar Scholarship that pays tuition for four years of Washington state tuition. They are THEA MARRIOTT and JOHN MIGHELL, and they will be honored at a luncheon with their legislators in Olympia May 20. Thea has chosen to attend UW, and John has chosen Whitman college in Walla Walla.
DR. SHAWN GAY, a Stanwood resident and Arlington doctor of chiropractic, was recently honored by the Washington State Chiropractic Association (WSCA) with its President's Gavel Award and its Outstanding Service Award. The awards were presented to Dr. Gay as he completed his term as president of the WSCA Board, on which he has served for the past six years. The 1000-member WSCA is the only statewide association that represents the chiropractic profession in Washington state. Dr. Gay is a graduate of Life Chiropractic College West and has been in practice for 11 years. He provides chiropractic care in Arlington.
The National Society of High School Scholars has announced that Stanwood High School student JENNIFER RAE BOWZER, of Stanwood, has been selected for membership. The society recognizes top scholars and invites only those students who have achieved superior academic excellence.
The PUD Board of Commissioners has recognized 18 area students who won awards in the utility's 2009 essay, art and photography competitions. Among the winners is BRYAN KERR, a junior from Stanwood High School, in the photography contest. Students were challenged to take photographs based on the theme of "energy." Winners were recognized at the May 11 board meeting, and their work is posted on the Web site, snopud. com.
Island County Superior Court Judge ALAN HANCOCK has received the 20 Year Judicial Service Award from the Washington State Association for Justice. Hancock was honored along with six other judges in a Law Day ceremony held in Seattle May 5. He received a bust of former United States Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas inscribed, "in appreciation for your long and diligent service on the bench and your commitment to the justice system in the State of Washington," and signed by WSAJ President John Budlong. Hancock was first elected as an Island County Superior Court judge in 1988. He has been reelected five times since then. He currently serves as chair of the Washington State Supreme Court's Ethics Advisory Committee and co-chairs its Code of Judicial Conduct Task Force. He has previously received the Washington State Bar Association's Outstanding Judge Award, and recently completed his second term as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Superior Court Judges' Association.
The Aberdeen, South Dakota Public Schools Foundation, Inc. has announced the 2009 inductees into the Central High School Hall of Fame, which includes BRUCE BAILLIE, of Camano Island, Class of 1949. He was among the group recognized for fine arts. These individuals will be honored at the CHS Hall of Fame banquet Sat., Sept. 26, at the high school in conjunction with Homecoming Week activities. This will be the fourth annual Hall of Fame induction ceremony, which is sponsored by the Aberdeen Public Schools Foundation.
