Henry Jones was the master and owner of a steamboat business here. Emil Frederick Bartz was operating the Stanwood Hotel.
100 YEARS AGO (1909)
Alexander Robertson was in his 10th year as school director for the Florence district. He was known as "the old man of Florence."
90 YEARS AGO (1919)
Thea Bury was born in Bellingham and later married Garth Whipple; they delivered the "Everett Herald" on Camano Island.
80 YEARS AGO (1929)
Bernice Dearinger was a member of the 1929 graduating class. After being orphaned and raised by her grandparents, the Iversens, she worked her way through high school as a house maid. She later married Jack Heckla. The City of Everett is discarding its lights for more modern ones and "our mayor thinks we should try to get them," said Ye Ole Editor.
70 YEARS AGO (1939)
Warm Beach School's new principal was Mrs. Lydia Lathrop of Alderwood Manor. Revetment of the Hatt Slough banks started at the west end near the bridge. May 20, Marie Fladland and Myron N. Leque were married in Seattle and later moved to Camano Island to raise their family. Dorothy Jane Douglass was a member of the 1939 graduating class, having been born in the Stanwood Hospital in 1921. She was baptized at Camano Lutheran, where her grandfather had donated the land for the church to be built. Her great-grandfather, J.P. Larson, helped build the altar. Dorothy was very community minded: Utsalady Ladies Aid, JSH volunteer, the church, etc.
60 YEARS AGO (1949)
West Coast Telephone applied for a permit to construct overhead wires over the west pass of the Stillaguamish for Camano Island people. Twin City High School band, in uniform, played at the Bond Rally in Everett; Clayton Knittel, director.
50 YEARS AGO (1959)
Development of Triangle Cove on Camano as a fish-rearing station was considered by state fisheries. Installation of direct dialing equipment for Camano was rescheduled.
40 YEARS AGO (1969)
The Madrona Post Office sub-station closed May 5, but islanders could still use Camano Island in return addresses. Stanwood FFA took first place in judging contests against 40 other schools.
30 YEARS AGO (1979)
A record-breaking crowd of clam diggers flocked to Camano State Park, when 20 tons of clams were estimated to be taken during the minus 3.2 tide. Previous record of cars was 3,800; Sunday's was 6,238, 200 turned away. Everett-based Olympic Bank opened in Stanwood. School staff helped to decide how additions were built to the high school and Church Creek Elementary.
20 YEARS AGO (1989)
Island County and Camano became members in the Washington Association of Counties in a self-insurance pool. Elden McCall, Cub Scout Master, announced winners of the Pinewood Derby. Stanwood Community Alcohol and Drug Services offices opened in west Stanwood. Rocky Point Gardens on Camano opened, as did Upper Case Books. Citizens organized to discourage a Lakewood industrial idea.
10 YEARS AGO (1999)
Three teens were removed from Stanwood High School after making threats. Stanwood's new Boeing/Mariner Junior Athletic Field at Heritage Park was dedicated with the Mariner Moose throwing a ceremonial opening pitch. The Stanwood High School Science Team placed 14th in the National Science Olympiad. Stanwood-Camano Yacht Club celebrated 30 years with dedication of the new pier and floating dock at Madrona Beach. A home in Church Creek Estates was accidentally torched by youngsters toying with propane.
