After 17 straight, fastpitch club loses two but clinches crown

Stanwood's boys' track and field team took third behind frontrunners Lake Stevens and Marysville Pilchuck at last week's Wes- Co North Championships. The Spartans earned 103 points to the Vikes' 180 and the Tomahawks' 133. The district meet will be at Shoreline Stadium. Full Story

Stanwood's girls' golf contingent placed 7th among the nine schools present at the WesCo North divisional meet at Marysville's Cedarcrest Golf Course last week. Lady Spartan Jackie Afualo's 51 Stableford points tied for fifth-best among the 45 golfers. Full Story
Fields outdistances all league competitors in 1600 and 3200
Stanwood High distance specialist Minna Fields demonstrated tremendous stamina in winning both the 1600- and 3200-meter races at the WesCo North championships held in Oak Harbor last week. The sophomore and her fellow Lady Spartans finished second to the Tomahawks of Marysville Pilchuck with 132 points to the Tommies' 142. Full Story

Stanwood's No. 1 singles player, Megan LaLone, and the doubles team of Kallen Shaughnessy and Anne Hamiter all advanced to this week's district girls' tennis tournament by finishing second during last week's Western Conference North Division tennis tourney. Full Story
Sports physicals offered June 13
The Stanwood AAAA Booster Club will be hosting a sports physical day Sat., June 13, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Stanwood High School. Physicians from The Everett Clinic and Skagit Valley Medical Center will be donating their time to offer sports physicals for athletes entering the seventh through 12th grades next fall. Cost is $20. Smith sets pace for Spartan golfers
The Stanwood Spartans, led by Wade Smith's 77, finished sixth in the Western Conference North divisional tournament held at Everett's Walter Hall Golf Course last week. The Sparts' 427 cumulative score was 48 strokes behind conference champion Snohomish, which had 379 points. Full Story
Hershey meet May 30
The Hershey Youth District Track and Field Meet will be held Sat., May 30, at Burlington-Edison High School beginning with sign-ups at 9 a.m. for all athletes born between 1995-2000. For the meet, both a $5 registration fee and a birth certificate will both be required. Full Story

Area 8.1 and 8.2: Lingcod are being caught. Though results are mixed, it is still worth getting out there. Onamac and the head are both producing fish.
