Olson to fill Port Susan Middle principal position
Mike Olson, district assistant superintendent for secondary education, will be Port Susan Middle School's new principal next year. When making decisions about cuts, the Stanwood-Camano School District had announced that instead of hiring someone to fill the position, one of the assistant superintendents would become Port Susan's principal. City and WSDOT aim to keep noise down during bridge work
The noise level for resurfacing on the SR 532 Viaduct (railroad bridge), just west of Pioneer Highway, took center stage at Thursday night's city council meeting. Council members unanimously approved a variance to the existing noise ordinance for construction to begin in August. Full Story
Residence burglarized, purse stolen from vehicle and car recovered
Police in the city of Stanwood responded to the following recently: May 14, several items were stolen in a burglary of a residence in the 27500 block of 78th Avenue NW. May 14, a purse was stolen from a vehicle parked in the 26600 block of 72nd Avenue NW. Full Story

Strangers, friends help family deal with flood aftermath
A few days after the January flood, Ruth LeBrun was on the phone with a disaster assistance representative from Snohomish County. Then, the estimate of repairs to her home was around $30,000. Memorial Day and Stanwood's WWI hero
Private Frank H. Hancock was Stanwood's first casualty of World War I, but this Memorial Day, there is no grave here at which to pause, because Hancock is buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D. C. A tombstone of white marks the resting place of the 26-yearold, who was killed in action in 1918, only three months after going to the front lines in France. Full Story
Signups wanted for Soap Box Derby
The second annual Stanwood- Camano Soap Box Derby will be held June 20, and the call has gone out to drivers, old and new, to dust off their building skills and sign up for the race. The headquarters is set up in the old gas station behind Bob's Market in Stanwood along SR 532. The first clinic was held April 23, and more clinics are planned. Full Story

Continued support needed for kidney patient
There is a small hiccup in Steve Colvin's kidney transplant plans. Colvin, of Camano Island, was diagnosed with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), a condition where the kidney no longer filters the blood properly. He is currently on hemodialysis, which requires a trip three times a week to the Puget Sound Kidney Center in Smokey Point for the four-hour procedure. Full Story
County dumps holidays to save costs
Island County solid waste facilities will now be closed on federal holidays and one county holiday beginning Memorial Day, Mon., May 25. In the past, county solid waste facilities on Camano Island and in Oak Harbor, Coupeville and Bayview on Whidbey Island have been open on federal holidays, with the exception of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's. McKenna applauds removal of Craigslist's illicit erotic services ads
Attorney General Rob McKenna recently applauded Craigslist for its decision to eliminate its erotic services ads and create a new reviewed adult category that Web site employees will review. This spring, Snohomish County PUD is asking customers to join the PUD Energy Challenge and make a pledge to reduce their energy use by 10 percent. A total of 16 full-time and part-time Island County employees will be laid off June 1. An additional seven positions will be eliminated through attrition, and 19 employees will have reduced work hours.
