Empty storefronts and new faces

Mayor Dianne White said she has “never been one to think the glass is half empty.”

She holds onto her optimism, especially driving through downtown Stanwood, where the empty storefronts are a little disconcerting.

Several businesses have shut down since the holidays, including The Sports Station, which left a long, empty east Stanwood storefront in its wake.

State lawmakers consider surcharge on boats 16 feet, up

A $1 surcharge on vessel registration fees of both commercial and pleasure boats is being considered by state lawmakers to fund a Washington Center for Marine Innovation (WCMI) at Skagit Valley College.

A hearing on Senate Bill 6264 was held in Olympia last month by the Energy, Natural Resources and Marine Waters Committee and on the house bill, HB 2444.

Senate passes gay marriage bill; governor expected to sign into law

As Lieutenant Governor and president of the Senate Brad Owens announced that the same-sex marriage bill, ESSB 6239, had passed, an anxious audience of hundreds watching the tense floor debate erupted with applause.

The bill, which had bipartisan support, passed the Senate 28 to 21 last Wednesday.

• After assaulting a store employee who detained him for theft on Jan 27, a 26-year-old Camano Island man in the 27000 block of 92nd Avenue NW was referred for shoplifting (thirddegree theft) and fourth degree assault.

Early data collected during last week’s annual Point in Time homeless count show a slight increase over numbers collected during 2011.

During the Jan. 26 count in Snohomish County, many volunteers spent the day gathering information on the county’s homeless population.
